Science, Climate and Technology Policy
Artificial intelligence, quantum systems, cybersecurity and climate resilience are reshaping our world faster than policy can keep pace. UMD is uniquely positioned to lead in technological advancement and in the governance of emerging technologies that affect every community. Artificial intelligence, quantum systems, cybersecurity and climate resilience are reshaping our world faster than policy can keep pace. UMD is uniquely positioned to lead in technological advancement and in the governance of emerging technologies that affect every community. At SPP, we are connecting innovation with governance through three complementary efforts.
Tech Policy for the Public Good: A bold new effort to position UMD as the nation’s premier hub for evidence-based, public-interest technology policy, equipping students, producing actionable research, and convening thought leaders on issues like AI governance, data privacy, and digital platforms. This initiative will focus on developing AI policies that serve the public good by expanding opportunity, improving lives, and strengthening democracy.
- Center for Global Sustainability: Advancing ambitious climate and sustainability policy at local, national and international levels, with research that informs governments, businesses and NGOs around the world.
- Science, Technology, Ethics and Policy (STEP) minor: Through the STEP minor, students explore how science and technology are embedded in social and political systems — and how thoughtful governance can turn innovation into policy impact.
With your support, we will expand fellowships, endow faculty chairs and launch a Tech Policy Lab to anchor this work — ensuring that the next generation of leaders is prepared to harness innovation for the public good.
