School of Public Health
Boldly transforming the way that people everywhere can lead healthier, happier lives.
Why Public Health
In the School of Public Health, we are passionate about helping people live healthy lives—here in Maryland and around the globe. To us, "health" happens in the doctor's office, the community and beyond. Public health is about education, healthcare, environment, community and economic status and how they all weave together to create a person’s well-being. We strive for optimal whole-person health for everyone, everywhere.
As a result, we are always in motion, changing and growing with the people and communities at the heart of all that we do.
- Our students dream of becoming the next researcher whose discovery helps to prevent a major disease outbreak, director of the World Health Organization, entrepreneur to develop a new wearable medical device or counselor to someone with emotional trauma.
- Our faculty members strive to inform equitable health access, ensure data-driven health treatments and policies, stem the tides of health epidemics from opioid addiction to mental health crises and empower the next generation of public health leaders.
- Our alumni reinforce our mission by leading healthcare systems, treating patients, managing human resources departments, addressing food insecurities, teaching youth sports and mentoring our students.
- Our partners improve the lives of the people they serve, building community connectedness, providing resources and reducing cases of disease.
This only skims the surface of what drives our work every day. Join us as we move Forward for the health of all.

Why now
In the world today, we face transformational disruption: disease outbreaks, dramatic weather pattern changes, a tumultuous political climate and large-scale adoption of new technology in healthcare—to name a few. With these factors come rising concerns about health disparities and a population-wide desire to address and prevent further health effects.
Public health is foundational to addressing any of the world's grand challenges, and at the University of Maryland, we have the talent and expertise ready to overcome these obstacles.
In Fall 2025, we welcomed our largest freshman class in history. Students come to us with talent, open hearts and a desire to do good. Many of them pursue this work because of personal experiences. It takes a special person to dedicate their lives in service to others, and we take our responsibility of guiding them very seriously. We inspire our students with research, vision and the tools to go out into the world and change it.
In addition, our faculty research and practice continues to gain national attention.
- Our research, in part, led to the federal government's recommendation to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- We developed a model using artificial intelligence that can help practitioners make treatment recommendations that are unique to a patient's clinical and social needs.
- We established a research center that will reimagine the infrastructure needed to support healthy aging.
- Our Center for Healthy Families remains one of few academic-based clinics for couples and family counseling that serves both the university and surrounding community.
With growing engagement in our educational programs and research, we will continue to fearlessly pursue health for the whole person, and for all people, wherever the world needs us.
The field of public health is for the fearless. It is a bold and noble mission, a calling to do good and a responsibility to lead with compassion, expertise and humility. In the School of Public Health, we are proud to say we're doing just that.

Our Priorities
Forward for the Health of All
Public health is about doing good for others in the world. This noble and selfless mission takes many hands, minds and hearts to do the work. We are moving Forward with passion, skill, determination—and you.
In our halls, 2,500 future public health leaders walk to class, dreaming of how they will one day help others to lead healthier lives. When we invest in them, we invest in tomorrow’s health.
Forward for Tomorrow's Trailblazers
Whether it’s helping a person who is paralyzed to walk or analyzing huge data sets in seconds, artificial intelligence is transforming the future of healthcare. We are boldly leading that charge.
Forward for Bold Healthcare Solutions
We foster change around the globe through deep partnerships based on mutual trust, understanding and respect. With cultural sensitivity, we are building others' capacity to help themselves.
Forward for Stronger Global Communities
Public health needs begin in our own backyard. Some Maryland residents lack access to reliable transportation, while others experience food insecurity. We are fearless in our ambition to address these challenges and more.
